What it does
Copilot in Sales sits inside Dynamics 365 Sales and, separately, inside Outlook and Teams. It summarises records and opportunities, drafts and replies to emails, preps you for meetings and surfaces news and changes on your accounts.
Key facts
- Two things share the name: Copilot inside the Sales app, and the "Copilot for Sales" add-in for Outlook/Teams that also works with Salesforce CRM.
- The in-app Copilot is included with Sales Enterprise and Sales Premium. The Outlook/Teams Copilot for Sales needs its own licence (bundled with Sales Premium/Enterprise or bought standalone).
- Meeting prep and record summaries pull from CRM data, so summary quality tracks data quality.
- Email drafting uses the record context plus the thread; it doesn't invent pipeline numbers, it reads them.
When to use / skip
Turn it on for any team living in Outlook — the email and meeting-prep wins are immediate. Skip the hard sell to reps whose CRM records are thin; they'll get bland summaries and blame the tool.
Configuration decisions
- Which record types and fields Copilot summarises and saves back to CRM.
- Whether reps can save Copilot-generated emails and notes to the timeline automatically.
- Rollout of the Outlook/Teams add-in and its admin consent.
Gotchas
- People conflate the in-app Copilot with the Outlook add-in. They're licensed and deployed differently — name them precisely.
- Save-to-CRM has to be configured or the value leaks; drafts stay in Outlook and never reach the timeline.
Consultant notes
- Data readiness is the whole game. Run a field-completeness check on your top opportunities before demoing summaries.
- Get the Outlook add-in through admin consent early — it's an Entra app registration, not just a checkbox.
- If the client also runs Salesforce, the Outlook Copilot for Sales talks to it too; useful during migrations.
