What it does
Copilot in Field Service helps with work order management — summarising work orders, drafting updates, and speeding up scheduling. It shows up in the Field Service app, in Outlook, in Teams and in the mobile app for technicians. The Scheduling Operations agent watches the schedule and proposes reassignments when things change.
Key facts
- Copilot spans several surfaces: the model-driven app, the Outlook add-in for triaging incoming requests into work orders, Teams, and Field Service Mobile for on-site techs.
- The Scheduling Operations agent is an autonomous agent that monitors for disruptions (cancellations, delays, new urgent jobs) and recommends schedule changes for a dispatcher to approve.
- In-app Copilot help comes with Field Service; the autonomous scheduling agent is metered.
- Mobile Copilot depends on the tech having connectivity and the right app version.
When to use / skip
Use Copilot for work-order summarisation and the Outlook triage flow wherever dispatchers drown in email. Bring in the Scheduling Operations agent only if you already run Resource Scheduling Optimization or a mature manual scheduling process.
Configuration decisions
- Which surfaces you enable (desk, Outlook, Teams, mobile) and for which roles.
- How much autonomy the scheduling agent gets — recommend-only versus auto-apply within limits.
- Integration with existing scheduling and optimisation setup.
Gotchas
- Scheduling automation on messy resource and requirement data produces confident nonsense. Clean the scheduling foundation first.
- Techs on poor signal won't get mobile Copilot; don't build a process that assumes it's always there.
Consultant notes
- The scheduling agent sits on top of your scheduling maturity. If dispatch is chaotic today, fix that before automating it.
- Field Service data models (bookable resources, requirements, territories) must be sound, or recommendations will be wrong in ways users spot instantly.
- Pilot with dispatchers who trust the current schedule, so you get honest feedback on the agent's suggestions.
