What it does

Emergency calling (E911 in North America, 999 in UK, 112 in EU) compliance configures D365 to route emergency numbers to PSTN without normal workstream logic. When a customer dials 911/999/112, the call bypasses queue routing and connects directly to the Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) with the agent's registered location. This is a mandatory feature where emergency services regulation applies.

When to use / skip

Use E911 wherever emergency calling is regulated. Skip only in unregulated territories (rare) or if you're running a private PBX with no PSTN access. Default to enabled, disabling it needs legal approval.

Configuration decisions

  • Location database: Use ACS default or integrate a third-party service (Intrado, Emergency Reporting, etc.).
  • Location accuracy: Office address, regional office, or street-level (street-level is more accurate but needs mobile location services).
  • Location refresh frequency: Real-time for office-based agents, periodic for remote workers.
  • Fallback address: What to use if you can't pin down an agent's location.
  • Emergency contact: Who the PSAP can ring if they need more info (facility manager, etc.).
  • Jurisdiction: Explicitly set the country/region for correct PSAP routing.

Gotchas

  • Location caching persists. Agent moves offices, but the old location sticks around for 5–10 minutes.
  • Remote agents often fail location detection. Mobile location services off or GPS unavailable = "location unknown" error.
  • PSAP rejects bad address data. Incomplete or invalid addresses get rejected. Validate all address fields.
  • Compliance audits are routine. Keep audit logs of all agent locations. You'll need them.
  • Number porting clears E911. Port a number into D365 and E911 registration vanishes. Reconfigure after porting.
  • Mass location updates cause throttling. Office relocation? Batch your location updates carefully or the API backs off.
  • Emergency calls can't be transferred. Call ends when the agent hangs up. That's by design.

Consultant notes

  • Treat E911 as a non-negotiable compliance item from day one. It goes on the project checklist alongside licence confirmation and data residency: not as an afterthought in the week before go-live.
  • Remote and hybrid agents are the hardest part of the E911 problem. Get HR or facilities to provide registered home office addresses early in the project: you'll need them for location registration. Don't assume agents will self-register accurately.
  • The number porting / E911 registration loss is a known gotcha that catches people who port numbers after initial setup. Add "re-verify E911 registration after any number porting" to your post-porting checklist. It takes five minutes to check and saves a regulatory incident.
