What it does

Puts LinkedIn Sales Navigator profile and company panels onto Dynamics 365 Sales forms, and — with CRM Sync configured on the LinkedIn side — writes InMails, messages and Smart Links back onto the Dynamics timeline. It is two integrations bolted together: embedded controls from Microsoft, data sync from LinkedIn.

Key facts

  • Licensing is the gate. You need either a Microsoft Relationship Sales subscription (Sales Enterprise plus Sales Navigator Advanced Plus) or a standalone Sales Navigator Advanced Plus licence. The integration documentation is explicit that Advanced alone does not carry it.
  • Installed from Sales Hub at App Settings > General Settings > LinkedIn integration, from Advanced Settings, or from the marketplace listing. Three solutions should end up in the environment: LinkedInSalesNavigatorControlsForUnifiedClient, LinkedIn, and msdyn_LinkedInSalesNavigatorAnchor.
  • Requires a System Administrator to install, and a cloud environment. On-premises Dynamics 365, and Dataverse without a Dynamics licence, are out.
  • Two control families: the Lead control (top card, news and icebreakers, mutual connections, related leads) and the Account control (top card, news, connections, Account IQ, Find Key People). Each has a lookup variant that matches on name fields rather than a stored profile ID.
  • Matching works by field values on first load, then by record GUID afterwards. Users can correct a bad match manually, and that correction sticks.
  • The toggle Sales navigator integration puts the controls on Account, Contact, Lead and Opportunity forms. Separate toggles cover daily profile picture updates, personal and employment change notifications, and hiding employment notifications.
  • CRM Sync and activity writeback are configured in LinkedIn Sales Navigator, not in Dynamics. Without it, "Add to CRM" and message writeback do not function.
  • Writeback is limited to InMails, messages and Smart Links. You cannot import leads or accounts from Sales Navigator into Dynamics through CRM Sync.
  • The org chart does not pull LinkedIn profile photos; only pictures held in Dynamics show.
  • Supported in the Sales Professional app, though an admin has to add the controls to forms.
  • LinkedIn lead generation capabilities — the Lead Gen Forms sync — was deprecated with effect from December 2024, with custom integration named as the replacement.

When to use / skip

Worth doing where the client already pays for Sales Navigator Advanced Plus and sellers actually use it. In that case the controls remove a browser tab and the writeback gives managers visibility of outreach that would otherwise be invisible. That second point is usually the real business case, not the profile cards.

Skip it where the client has Sales Navigator Core or Advanced and no appetite to upgrade. You will spend the workshop explaining why the panels are empty. Skip it too where only two or three people have licences: the forms then show a dead panel to everyone else, which looks worse than not having it.

Be sceptical when it appears in a requirements list as "LinkedIn integration" with no plan detail. Nine times out of ten what the client wants is lead capture from LinkedIn ads, which is the deprecated capability, not this one.

Configuration decisions

  • Which licence route: Microsoft Relationship Sales, or Sales Navigator bought directly from LinkedIn. It changes procurement, renewal dates and who to escalate to.
  • Which forms carry the controls, and where on the form. A full-width control on the main tab pushes the fields sellers need below the fold.
  • Standard control versus lookup control per entity — lookup matching on name fields is more forgiving for records with no LinkedIn identifier, and noisier.
  • Whether CRM Sync and activity writeback are in scope. This needs a LinkedIn administrator and their cooperation; it is not a Dynamics task.
  • Whether employment-change and profile-picture notifications stay on. They are the most-liked feature in demos and the most-muted feature in production.
  • What happens on forms for users without a Sales Navigator licence — hide by role or accept the empty panel.

Gotchas

  • Email addresses must match between Dynamics and Sales Navigator for CRM Sync. Clients with a legacy firstname.lastname@ scheme in one system and something else in the other will see sync fail with no useful message.
  • The integration shows as Inactive when any of the three solutions is missing, when CRM Sync is not enabled, or when the licence is not assigned. All three look identical from the Dynamics side.
  • The documentation is inconsistent about whether Advanced or only Advanced Plus supports the integration. Get the client's LinkedIn account team to confirm in writing before you commit to a design.
  • Anything failing inside the LinkedIn panel is LinkedIn's support queue, not Microsoft's. Set that expectation before go-live or every issue becomes yours.
  • No lead or account import means no "populate CRM from Sales Navigator lists". People assume the opposite.
  • Older environments running version 2.x of the anchor solution still label Smart Links as PointDrive, and it will not update itself.

Consultant notes

  • Confirm the exact Sales Navigator plan on the client's licence statement at discovery. "We have LinkedIn Premium" means nothing here.
  • Demo the writeback on the timeline, not the profile card. Managers buy the activity trail; sellers already have the profile in another tab.
  • Push back on Lead Gen Forms requirements — that route was deprecated and building a replacement is a project of its own.
  • Get the LinkedIn admin into the room for the CRM Sync step. Without them you will stall for weeks on something that takes an afternoon.
  • Before go-live, test with a licensed seller and an unlicensed one on the same form, and decide which of those two experiences you are willing to ship.

Worth another look if the client changes Sales Navigator plan, or if Microsoft resolves the Advanced versus Advanced Plus wording.
